In the early years of the metal injection molding industry, there were many barriers to entry. The biggest challenge was, where do you get your materials? There really wasn’t any company making materials that you could buy off the shelf in large quantities. The pioneers in the industry mixed their own feedstocks. To start they specialized in certain types of materials or range of materials. As the metal injection molding industry grew, BASF developed Catamold(R) feedstocks. Today they are the largest supplier of MIM feedstocks in the world. Their line of Catamold(R) feedstocks include:

Low alloy steels

Stainless steels - 316L, 17-4PH, 420, 430, 440B

Tool Steels - M2

Titanium - ASTM Grade 4

Tungsten

Ceramics

To get more information and specifications about BASF feedstocks go to Catamold(R)Feedstocks

Metal injection molding is a relatively new manufacturing technology. The process been around for about 25 years. When the industry first started out, there were only a few suppliers who used their own proprietary feed stocks and materials for making the small intricate metal components. The capabilities of the process captured the minds and imagination of engineers and technical people throughout the world. But they were all thinking the same saying. How could a process that has 18 to 20% shrink, make consistent, repeatable product? We have been involved in the business for 10 years. Have made product ranging in size from so small that is difficult to see to parts as large as 7 inches long. And the amazing fact about the whole process is that even with the 18 to 20% shrink, the consistency from part to part is excellent.
